Interviewer:
What did you do when they had to change your gearbox and you weren't able to drive?
Kimi:
I slept.
Play like you are in 1st. But train like you are in 2nd.

Kimi is a real racer. If you put him in a bed and fixed a wheel to each corner, he’d still be fast.

I’m pretty positive. I raced all of last year so it should be even better this season. I know the team and they know me so we can work together well. I know we had a good car last year and we won a race. I know that the E21 feels pretty good from what I’ve seen so far and we’ve got lots of things to come on the car for the next test. We want to do better than we did last year, that’s the aim. If we can achieve that, I don’t know, but we’re certainly going to be trying hard.

Before and after those race weekends last year, reserve driver Bottas was often seen helping the Williams mechanics and truckies set up and dismantle the garage.
The Finn told British Sky television at Jerez: “I promised the guys, even though I am racing now, at least once I will come and help them again.”

It was good to get behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car again. The E21 feels quite good so far, even if the balance isn’t quite to my liking yet. That didn’t stop us going through the programme we wanted to do which had a lot of aero runs in it. We know the car can go faster, we were just running through what we needed to achieve. It’s a shame that we had a clutch issue at the end of the day, but that’s why we come testing so we can find these problems and fix them.

Q:
Kimi. He’s a unique personality who likes to do his own thing. How difficult is that to control and implement into the team?
Eric:
You clearly have to draw a line. To be honest he is not difficult to manage, but you have to make the engineers understand and respect his way of thinking and behaving. He is delivering, so he gets the respect easily.
Q:
So when he says on the team radio ‘Leave me alone, I know what I’m doing’ you have to just trust him?
Eric:
Yes, you have to have a lot of trust! (laughs) On top of being Kimi - the character that we know - he did cleverly build his system. It takes some time until he gets up to speed, but he is delivering because he knows that probably his strongest asset is race craft. And little by little over the course of the year he adjusted all the parameters to make himself fast, strong and in a position to deliver - the Kimi we like! He might have his moments sometimes, but it is up to us to adjust what we want to achieve to his style rather than the reverse. I probably prefer to switch the team to the style of Kimi.
Q:
So is it a case of ‘King Kimi’ at Lotus?
Eric:
No, because at the same time I don’t want to have a spoiled character who is probably leading the team in the wrong direction. We are not servicing his moods. We are just making sure that he can be himself. This is a big difference.
The Lotus looks real nice.

Q:
Seb, what are your plans for world domination this year?
Seb:
"I'm German but I didn't say that. I have no moustache.
I haven’t named it yet - we need to get to know each other first!
- Sebastian Vettel about RB9 (via f1-givesyouwings)
Of course, I’ve not driven the E21 yet so it’s difficult to say what could or could not be possible for the year ahead. We know we had a good car last season, but everyone is working hard to make the best package. I will be working with the team to help get the car as strong as we can, then in Melbourne we’ll have our first taste of results. It’s a long season from there. 2012 was a good start; let’s see what we can do in 2013.

Nothing I saw last year made me think that another championship was impossible in the future.

1987 was quite a good year for atletes to be born. Me, Murray, Messi, Vettel… Not bad.

It was around Monaco gp time, Sebastian Vettel and I were looking at some cars. I’m not big on my road cars to be honest, but when we started talking about this one (Porsche 911 GT2 RS) it was a no brainer.
- Mark Webber on his Porsche car (x)
I’m really pleased that Mercedes-Benz is giving me the opportunity to test their DTM car and I’m looking forward to getting acclimatised to a race car again. It’s still too early to make any statements about my future because of this one test. I’m just looking forward to tomorrow and we’ll see what happens after that.
